- Before Casa Popenoe was purchased by Dr. Wilson Popenoe, it was the residence of Andres Guerra and his wife Venancia de Lopez. Originally built in 1763, the residence was a distinguished property of a prominent and emerging family. Employed as a royal scribe, Andres Guerra was a significant informant for the Spanish crown. It was largely due to his reports that the king of Spain, Charles III, decreed in 1776 that Santiago de los Caballeros was to be abandoned, and the capital relocated to the present day Guatemala de la Asuncion.
When Dr. Wilson Popenoe purchased the house in 1928 it was known as "La Casa del Capuchino" due to the prominent "Capuchin" cypress tree growing in its central court-yard.
