Oliver George Stephens

He notably participated in the “Padiglione Italia” for the 54th Venice Biennale curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. This opportunity allowed him to represent his country at the young age of 21. Making him one of the youngest participants that year. This prompted him to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design to pursue art.

During his time in SCAD Oliver became increasingly interested in the historic architecture of Savannah Georgia, which in turn prompted a strong appreciation for history and its preservation. Oliver considers himself a preservationist as well as an artist, and has worked in notable museums such as the SCAD MOA in Georgia, and Casa Popenoe in his hometown of Antigua Guatemala.

Born and raised in Guatemala to an American father and an Italian mother, Oliver developed an extensive world-view that stretched far beyond the confines of his small nation. Outside he spoke Spanish, went to a local school, and experienced the life of a Guatemalan youth. Inside his parents raised and educated him in the fashion of their own homelands, speaking both English and Italian simultaneously. Therefore, before long Guatemala felt small and crowded compared to the promise of the vast world that opened up to him.

Leaving home at the age of 19, Oliver spent the next decade abroad, specifically Italy and the United States where he developed a stronger understanding of his unorthodox heritage. Nevertheless, Guatemala would always beckon him home and one way or another he never goes too long without going back. Currently the artist is living and working in Berlin, a noted art capital, where he hopes to bring Guatemala's artistic voice to this prominent international stage.

Oliver George Stephens (b. 1990, Antigua Guatemala) is a contemporary artist based in Berlin Germany. He double-majored with a BFA in painting and a BFA in historic preservation from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017.
